Pareij Wetlands is an amazing birding destination in Gujarat. Facebook birders a must destination.

I had been planning for a long time to visit Gujarat to do some serious birding. Having been to Bunni, the grasslands in Kutch, the various water bodies along the national highways, Gir Forest and Thol, the famous migratory bird sanctuary I felt I needed to explore other potential areas.

Eddie, a schoolmate who had dropped into Abu for a brief visit, suggested we go birding in the Kheda wetlands of Gujarat, an area 60 km out of Ahmedabad. I jumped at the offer, better to be a part of Gujarat at this time of the year rather than spending a long time in Abu freezing my butt off with the cold wave covering this part of the world. Once again, I find myself enchanted by the timeless beauty of Bera Rural Rajasthan, a region that holds a special place in my heart since the 1980s. Undulating landscapes, unusual granite rocks, and the pleasure of adventure have become my constant companions throughout the years. Devi Singh, my close buddy, has been a loyal partner in these experiences, sharing in the thrill of fishing, hiking, and unraveling the secrets that lay inside this captivating region.

My stories about Bera provoke sceptical replies from the inexperienced. “Mate, you’ve been in the desert too long; you’re hallucinating,” they said, joking. To address such scepticism, I’ve chosen to let my recent experiences speak for themselves through the lens of my camera and the words of my blog.

Enter “HALLUCINATIONS,” my most recent blog article evoking the spirit of Bera Rural Rajasthan. The images and descriptions seek to depict the enchanting beauty and captivating creatures that flourish in this deserted area. A picture is worth a thousand words, as the adage goes, and my blog serves as a tribute to the bizarre encounters that await those who dare to journey into this lesser-known jewel.

The highlight of my recent trip to Bera was the incredible experience of birding in this secluded part of Rajasthan. The months of October to March prove to be great, as the countryside comes alive with avian delights. My Bera bird collection exemplifies the great biodiversity that inhabits this parched country, offering a glimpse into the unusual and sometimes ignored species that thrive against the backdrop of the Rajasthan desert.

Bera Rural, Rajasthan, continues to be a timeless retreat for people seeking adventure and oneness with nature. Through the lens of my recollections, Devi Singh’s friendship, and the visual storytelling in “HALLUCINATIONS,” I urge fellow travellers to embrace the beauty of this intriguing region and explore the hidden treasures that await in the heart of rural Rajasthan.

Gir Wildlife Sanctuary: A Birding Adventure

If you’re planning a trip to Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, here’s a tip that might save you some frustration to book your safari permit well in advance. Or else you’ll be facing the same problem that we did. To get our 6:30 am safari permit, our driver went to the Sinh Sadan Orientation Centre at 4:30 am. However, because of advance bookings, we missed out and had to settle for the 9:30 am safari instead.

For us, lion sightings weren’t the top priority—we were there for birdwatching. That said, we were lucky enough to spot lions during our safaris. What excited us was the challenge of compiling a comprehensive list of bird species.

Our two safaris during our visit were, by chance, on the same route assigned by the computerized permit system. Disappointing, but nature always has its surprises, and we still spotted a variety of birds and wildlife.

If you’re planning a trip to Gir, it’s wise to avoid weekends and peak-season festivals. You’re more likely to see crowds of people than wildlife at such times.

I suggest you take a moment to look at the collection of bird photos from our safaris. Gir isn’t just about its majestic lions—it’s a treasure trove for birding enthusiasts as well!
