Duck Pond Drama: A Heroic Story of Survival and Freedom.Mount Abu.
An impromptu journey to Mt. Abu’s gorgeous “Duck Pond” turned into a memorable experience of watching nature’s endurance and the determination of a Pond Heron. On February 1, 2024, my niece Crescentia and friend Mohan joined me for an unplanned excursion to Abu’s water bodies, which turned out to be a front-row seat to a life-or-death fight.
The day began, with Crescentia asking us to investigate the water birds in the region following a school session. Little did we know that our expedition would become a heart-wrenching encounter with a scared Indian Pond Heron.
As we observed ducks swimming in the water, a disruption captured our attention in one pond corner. Through my lens, I spotted the source: an Indian Pond Heron trapped in what seemed to be a flag, from a celebration tossed into the water.
The other aquatic birds had not ignored the heron’s misery. Black-winged stilts hovered overhead, taking in the developing scene. The heron, trapped in a dangerous predicament, battled for its liberation. With the odds stacked against it, the effort would be futile.
While we observed the heron's brave struggles to break free from its entanglement, the tension in the air became evident. It appeared to be a difficult struggle, with no imminent aid in sight. Remarkably, against all odds, the heron’s unwavering resolve paid off. It released itself by thudding its wings, flying back into the sky.
The relief was contagious, and the neighbouring waterfowl joined our joy. Fortunately, no raptors made any unexpected appearances during this vital period.
Stay tuned for further updates, as I’ll be back with the scoop of the day, highlighting the bright and spectacular bird life recorded via my lens on February 1, 2024. Nature’s dramas never end, and this unexpected meeting at the Duck Pond will live on in our thoughts.
