Birding in May 2025: Mount Abu.

 An Unpredictable Start to Summer.

May ushers in a dry, sunny season in Mount Abu, with clear skies and warm days. In contrast, 2025 has presented an unusual situation, with altered weather patterns causing widespread disruption to the community and ecosystem. The natural seasonal cycle seems broken, and birds, bees, and trees are acting unexpectedly.

 An Unexpected Pre-Monsoon Event

The weather marked the first ten days of May more akin to a pre-monsoon season than the scorching heat one might expect. Thunderstorms, coupled with hailstorms, swept through Mount Abu, transforming the predictable May climate into an unpredictable spectacle. The usual summer heat gave way to a pleasant surprise: cool weather.

 Challenges and Rewards of Birding

For birding enthusiasts, these conditions brought both challenges and opportunities. May’s unusual mist veiled the scenery in mystery, hindering efforts to produce crisp, vivid photos. Although there were setbacks, the unique weather conditions created an unusual birding experience, showcasing behaviours and movements typically seen at this time of year.

A Collection of May’s Avian Wonders

During this period, I observed a fascinating array of bird species. Here’s a glimpse into some of the avian activity:

 1. Eastern Red-rumped Swallows: Darting through the misty skies, their agility was a marvel to watch despite the damp conditions.

2. Indian yellow Tit: Is a striking black and yellow bird with a prominent crest, a residential bird of Mount Abu.

3. One can see yellow-eyed babblers foraging in small groups within bushes.

 4. Pied Cuckoo: A welcome harbinger of the monsoon, yet to appear in Abu.

5. Crested Bunting: Its vivid plumage and spiky upright crest added a splash of colour to an otherwise mist-muted palette.

  Reflections on a Changing Climate

As a lifelong resident of Mount Abu, I’ve grown accustomed to the rhythms of nature here. But this May, we “Abuties” experienced a climate unlike anything we’ve known. These disruptions serve as a stark reminder of the broader shifts happening in our environment, prompting deeper reflection on how we interact with and impact the natural world.

For now, I invite you to join me in celebrating the resilience and beauty of the birds that grace Mount Abu, even amidst unpredictable conditions. The first ten days of May 2025 may have been a rollercoaster, but they have also been a testament to the adaptability and wonder of nature.

Mount Abu Birds – [ April 2025 ]

Highlight: Birds Spotted on 16 April 2025.

Mount Abu is home to a fascinating avian heritage, including two notable subspecies first described here and bearing the name “abuensis”—a nod to this unique region.

Abu’s Tawny-bellied Babbler (Dumetia albigularis abuensis)

Abu’s Red-whiskered Bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus abuensis)

Despite inhabiting neighbouring areas, these subspecies' close relationship with Mount Abu makes them unique to the area’s bird life. These species are unique to India and strongly connected to this stunning sanctuary’s local character.

The Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary continues to be a vital refuge for these birds and countless others, safeguarding the rich biodiversity of the Aravalli hills.

Mount Abu Birding: Late April Wonders

The Last Two Weeks of April 2025.

Mount Abu, a lush hill station in Rajasthan, continues to charm birdwatchers even as the migratory season winds down. During the last two weeks of April, birders will enjoy the mix of resident and migrating birds in this haven.

What you can expect

Migratory Birds

By April’s end, most wintering migrants have embarked on their long journeys back to breeding grounds. Despite this, you may still encounter the occasional Blyth’s Reed Warbler and other persistent species, creating brief, delightful moments.

Summer Migrants

With April, summer birds grace Mount Abu, including the striking Indian Golden Oriole, the musical Indian Blackbird, and the elegant Indian Paradise Flycatcher. These new arrivals paint the region with vibrant colours and the sounds of birdsong.

Resident Species

Mount Abu’s resident bird population remains a constant delight. From munis and finches to warblers and barbets, these steadfast inhabitants ensure that birding is never out of season.

Top Birding Tips

Choose Diverse Habitats

Mount Abu boasts varied ecosystems, including forests, grasslands, and rocky terrains. Visiting multiple habitats increases your chances of spotting a wider range of birds.

Rise Early

Early morning offers the best opportunity to see and hear birds, as they are most active and vocal during these hours.

Practice Patience

Birdwatching is as much about enjoying the process as it is about ticking species off a list. Slow down, pay attention to nature, and experience its rhythm.

Respect Wildlife

Always maintain a safe distance from birds and their nests. Avoid trampling vegetation or causing disturbances to their natural habitat.

Why April Birding Matters

While the peak birding season in North India spans October to February, April in Mount Abu holds its unique charm. A serene, fulfilling experience is offered by tranquil landscapes, quieter trails, and summer migrants.

So, grab your cameras and head to Mount Abu next April. With a bit of patience and an adventurous spirit, you’re sure to capture moments that linger long after the season has passed. Happy birding!
