Birds Mount Abu in January 2023.

Birds Mount Abu in January 2023.

Greetings from our small hill station in the new year. This is my initial post for the year 2023.
It is a fascinating place to visit. Visitors admire this Abode of the Gods. Bird watching is also good here. There are only a few notable species here, such as the Green Muni, the Spur Fowl, and the Indian Scimitar-Babbler, not neglect our Tawny-bellied Babbler. Abu, in comparison, is not a birding paradise comparable to other places.
Before I rant on, let me wish all my viewers “A joyful overdue NEW YEAR”
On Christmas Eve, I visited Abu Road, a small town in Rajasthan, India, renowned for its picturesque landscapes and rich wildlife. Given the limited number of birders in the region, I used the chance to examine and document a wide range of bird species, particularly those residing in the foothills of Mount Abu, and investigate the reasons behind certain species not venturing higher up the hill. I noticed that the House Crow, Pied Bush-chat, Bay-backed shrike, Common Babbler, and Large Grey Babbler are rarely observed in Mount Abu. My interest in nature and wildlife dates back to my teenage years, and I hope that my bird species documentation in both Mount Abu and Abu Road will assist future birders who visit these regions in Rajasthan. As I compile my collection, I will post bird species photographs taken during the last week of December 2022.

Birding in [December 2022]Mount Abu.mountabubirds.blogspot.com

 Birding in December 2022.

Continued.

I have compiled a collection of photos of birds that I took between the 16th and the 24th of December. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you very much for taking the time to appreciate my efforts to record the birds of Mount Abu. If you check my previous December posts, you'll see the type of birds you can expect. Our hills in Abu are a wonderful place to bird-watch, especially if you plan to visit this hill station in Rajasthan one day.

Peregrine Falcon Mating Attempt Mount Abu Raj India

I saw the Falcon doing a jig around 16:30 p.m. after feasting on the prey and calling to the other bird, just as I had seen her perform before she started a mating ritual. She did this for some time, lifting her tail up and down and spreading her feathers. The male bird sitting above responded to her call and manoeuvre. Taking off from his post, he made a circular flight before approaching the female to mate. It was a graceful sight to behold. The male at the last moment failed to land properly and bailed off. The female waited and at around 17:00hrs began calling and doing the mating ritual once again. She waited until 17:55 and then took off. Hopefully, if I'm here tomorrow and they do return, it will brighten my Christmas. Merry Christmas folks.

They inhabit forests, hills, and mountainous regions. Primarily on mammals and birds and build large stick nests in trees. Due to a stable population and widespread distribution, they classified the species as least concern by the IUCN.
Over the years, I have observed them here in Mount Abu. I have been photographing this species for a few years now. Its presence is rare in our abode.

Birding in [December 2022]Mount Abu.mountabubirds.blogspot.com

 Birding in December 2022

It’s been a cool third week of December. Frost has blanketed fields and automobiles every night for the last few days. Birding has not been too bad. I am delighted to see so many more visitors have arrived for the winter. The number of Green-winged teal, Pochard, Eurasian Coot, Gadwall, Northern pintail, Northern Shoveler, Tufted Duck, and Common Sandpiper has significantly increased. Hopefully, I will see their figures grow by mid-January.

I observed local and migratory birds on 15 Dec 2022.
I saw water migratory birds at our favourite Duck pond en route to Achalgarh. Enjoy the selection of our Abu Birds in December.

The black stork is a migratory bird species that breeds in Europe and Asia. During the winter months, it migrates to warmer regions, including parts of Africa and India. In Rajasthan, India, the black stork is known to migrate to the Keoladeo National Park and the surrounding areas. Every winter I have recorded a few of them visiting our small hill station, Mount Abu In Rajasthan.
