A Monsoon Magic Unfolds.

The second week of June 2025 brought with it a refreshing transformation across the landscape. Following the unseasonal rains in May and the early arrival of the monsoons, Mother Nature breathed new life into the hills of Mount Abu. Lush green slopes, wildflowers, and the sounds of birdsong created a breathtaking scene that captivated visitors.

Besides stunning scenery, this season offers birders something more. This is the best time to see young birds and both summer and monsoon migrants. The hills and woodlands are teeming with life, and every rustle of the leaves holds the promise of a new sighting.

A true highlight of the season is the elusive and endangered Green Avadavat (Munia). This tiny jewel, with its distinctive green plumage and scarlet bill, is a prized sight for any birder or photographer. Observing and documenting this species in its natural habitat is best done, perhaps, in June.

Other notable sightings during this time included the Indian Yellow Tit, Indian Blackbird, Indian Paradise Flycatcher, and the striking Indian Golden Oriole, all showcasing their vibrant breeding plumage amidst the rain-soaked leaves.

During one of our afternoon drives, my niece Crescentia made an unexpected discovery — a Jungle Owlet nestled in the shadows. Seeing this rarely photographed species was a delightful surprise, highlighting the forest’s hidden treasures.
